Hey guys, today I’ve brought another great Illustrator tutorial for you. In this tutorial you will learn to make a fabulous vector traveling suitcase.
So, let’s note down the requirements before beginning the tutorial.
Requirement: Flags and stamps Icon set
Program: Illustrator CS5
Time: 30-35 min
Before beginning the tutorial let’s have a look at the complete image:
Now we’ll start:
Start your illustrator and open up a new document of 800x800px.
Select the pen tool and draw a banana like shape shown below for the handle. Fill it with a radial gradient of grey to black. Select the gradient tool from tool pellet and place the lighter color in the middle of the shape (see the image given below for reference).
Copy the banana shape; fill it with black color# 000000.
Place the copied shape behind the original. Just 1px of the black copied shape should be visible as shown in the given image. Add shine by make a narrow banana like shape on the original, fill it with white color #ffffff and reduce its opacity to 75%.
I have magnified the image so you can easily follow the process of making screws and nuts on the handle. Now we are going to make a plastic screw in the handle and to do that select ellipse tool and make a small circle as shown below in the given picture. Fill it with the grey to black radial gradient. Now select the gradient tool and drag the grey or lighter section to one side or corner. See the given image below for reference.
Now make another small circle in the middle of the previous. Fill it with white to light grey radial gradient. See the picture given below for reference.
Select pen tool and make a narrow crescent shape and place it at the bottom of the first circle. Fill it with the same grey to black radial gradient. See the picture given below for the placement of gradient.
Make another small crescent shape and place it on upper side of the 2nd smaller circle for the depth. Fill it with black color#000000 or you can use the grey to black gradient as well.
Now make a cylindrical shape with the help of pen tool and fill it with grey to light grey gradient. Place it behind the 1st circle.
To add shine make a narrow white strip and place it on the cylindrical shape.
Now click on the all layers of plastic screw (1st and 2nd circles with both the crescent shapes included). Make them a group then copy the group and place the copied group at the end of cylindrical shape. See the picture given below for reference.
Now select all the layers of screws and cylindrical shape, go to Edit and copy the whole thing and place the copied layers at the other end of the handle. Right click on the selected layers and select Transform ->Reflect for the right direction.
Again select pen tool and make the shape shown in the image given below or the stand which connects the handle to the suitcase. Fill it with grey black radial gradient. Place the gradient as shown below.
Copy the stand and place it on the left side behind the handle screws. So now our handle is complete.
Now make a round rectangular shape for the main suitcase body. Cancel the fill and for stroke should be of 3pt with the grey color.
Create another round rectangular shape and place it in the inner side of the first one with dark grey color.
Fill this round rectangle with brown color and I’ve select the RGB Burlap texture from the graphic styles.
Now we are going to make plastic corners of the suitcase. Select pen tool to make the round corner shape, fill it with light grey to black radial gradient. Place the gradient’s light part at the corner as shown in the picture given below.
Copy the first corner and place one at every corner of the suitcase. To change the direction of the shape just select the shape and rotate.
Now we’ll place plastic nuts in the middle of the corner shape. Select ellipse tool and fill it with the grey to black radial gradient and again place the lighter part at the upper corner.
Make another circle on top of the first a bit smaller this time. Fill it with the dark grey to black radial gradient.
Now copy the nut and place it on each corner as shown below.
Now we are going to make Denim belts for our suitcase. Select the rectangle and make a vertical long rectangle. Fill it with royal blue color and give it the texture of RGB Denim from graphic styles.
Make another rectangle just like the one we made before but fill it with dark grey and place it behind the denim one so just 1px is showing as its shadow.
Now we are going to make the buckle of the belt. You can easily follow the shape given in the image below with pen tool and fill it with dark grey. This will be the shadow of the buckle.
Now make the same shape and place it on top of the shadow just a1px on the left side and fill it with the Neutral 17 gradient to give it the metallic look.
Now we are going to make holes in the belt and to do that select ellipse tool and make a circle and fill it with dark brown color (see the color composition in the image given below).
Now make a narrow crescent shape and fill it with light grey color. Place this shape with the circle to give it a bit of depth. See the picture given below for the placement.
Make a group of the circle and crescent shape and copy the group twice and place 2 more holes on the belt as shown in the image. Now to make the needle of the buckle, make a small cylindrical shape and fill it with Neutral 18 gradient.
Now the lower part of our buckle, make a horizontal cylindrical shape and fill it with Neutral 17 gradient. See the image for the placement.
Make another horizontal cylindrical shape a bit smaller than the previous and fill it with stainless steel gradient. Place it on top of the previous as shown below.
Now we are going to make the ending strap of the belt. Follow the shape given below in the image and give it RGB Denim texture like we’ve given the belt before.
Now give the shape a drop shadow. Copy the shape fill it with dark grey color and place it behind the denim one a bit below so it show as a shadow.
Copy the whole belt’s layers and place the copied group on the right side as 2nd belt. Now our suitcase is complete.
I’ve used a few shapes, stamps and flags to decorate the suitcase to give it the impression of traveling. You can easily make these or use the Websoulz freebie travel set. Now we are going to give the suitcase a drop shadow and for that select ellipse tool and make a narrow oval shape below the suitcase and fill it with black color. Give the oval Gaussian blur as shown below.
There you have it. Our traveling suitcase is ready to go.
Hope you had fun making it with me. Do share your thoughts and suggestions below in the comment box. Until the next time take care.
