In this tutorial, we will design an amazing 2012 calendar in Photoshop.
Program: Photoshop CS 5
Approximate time: 45 Minutes
Have a look at our final result before we start designing.
First of all, create a new document with Width 2000px and Height 1800px.
Next, we’ll create a new layer by going to Layer> New layer. Select the ‘Brush tool’ and # 311301 color. Pick the swirl brush and use it as displayed below to create a swirly tree. Draw each swirl to form tree branches on a new layer. You can resize and position each branch by pressing ‘Ctrl+ T’ with ‘Free Transform tool’.
Now we’ll create the tree trunk using ‘Pen tool’. So, select the ‘Pen tool’ and ‘Shape layers’ option from the top option menu to draw the trunk as shown below.
Now click on all the tree swirl layers while pressing ‘Shift’ key to select them all and go to Layer> Group layers. Label this group as ‘Swirly Tree’. After that, we’ll merge all the layers in this group by going to Layer> Merge group. Then go to Layer> Layer style> Drop shadow and use the following values here.
Next, we’ll create leaves for our tree. Create a new layer, select the ‘Brush tool’ and # 7acb06 color. Use the leaf shape brush on this layer. Now duplicate this leaf layer and press Ctrl+ T to activate ‘Free Transform tool’ and rotate this copied leaf a bit with the help of the ‘Free Transform tool’. Once again duplicate leaf layer, go to Edit> Transform> Flip horizontal and position it to form 3 leaves arrangement as shown below.
Duplicate this group a number of times to form leaves for the whole tree and keep on positioning them with the help of ‘Free Transform tool’. Collect all the 3 leaves layers in a group once you are done.
Now we’ll create 2 leaves groups for our swirly tree in the same way as we made 3 leaves. After that, right click on the 3 leaves merged group layer and select the option of ‘Copy layer style’ and then right click on this 2 leaves merged group layer and click on ‘Paste layer style’ option to get the same effect.
Collect all the flower layers in a group, and then go to Layer> Merge group. To give it some character, go to Layer> Layer style> Blending options and use the given settings.
Create a new layer and use the branch brush tool as displayed below.
Next, we’ll place few birds on the tree branches. Create a new layer, select the ‘Pen tool’, set 90d6be color and draw the shapes as shown below in separate layers with the variation of this color to differentiate different parts of our birdy.
Collect these layers in a group and then merge group. After that, go to Layer> Layer style> Bevel and Emboss and use the given values.
Now duplicate the bird layer 3-4 times. Click on one of the copies and press Ctrl+ U to open the ‘Hue and Saturation’ window. Play with its settings to get different colored birds and place them on the swirly tree.
Now go to Layer> Layer style> Inner shadow and use the given settings.
Duplicate this ground layer 4-5 times, drag each copy downward with ‘Move tool’ and change color of each copied layer using ‘Color overlay’ option.
It’s time to add text to the canvas. Create new layer, set #78ca02 as your foreground color. Select the ‘Brush tool’ and use 2 brushes from the swirls set as shown below. Whereas ‘0’ is written in ‘antsy pants’ font.
Click on one of layers of ‘2012’ and go to Layer> Layer style> Blending options and apply the given settings.
Duplicate one of the birdy layer and place it over the ‘0’ of 2012.
Now we’ll type ‘Happy New Year’ on a new layer using ‘joint by PizzaDude’ font, 81pt size and # f86a58 color. Give text some tilt using ‘Free transform tool’.
Duplicate this text layer, go to Layer> Layer style> Color overlay and use # 000000 color. Now drag the text downward and to the right of the original text to give it 3D look.
Click on the original text layer now and go to Layer> Layer style> Blending options and follow the given settings.
Create a new layer, select # f6ff00 color and apply Twirl Brush to form the background of our calendar.
After that, go to Layer> Layer style> Inner glow and use the following settings.
Open the 2012 calendar file, click on Ctrl+ A to select it, then press Ctrl+ C to copy it and create a new layer in the document below the rest of the layers and click on Ctrl+ V to paste the calendar.
Now go to Image> Adjustments> Hue/Saturation and use the following settings.
Position this calendar below the scenery we’ve created. That’s it. We are all done with 2012 calendar.
