Create 3D Wooden Text Effect from scratch in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a 3D wooden text effect in our favorite Photoshop. We use wood texture and various layer styles to achieve the 3D look. We’ll do nice shadowing and then we will add different elements on the canvas to make it more interesting. I’ll try to explain every step in depth to make it easy to follow for the Photoshop beginners. Hopefully, you will learn something useful. So, let’s get started!

Step 2

Load the “Field” image in Photoshop, press Ctrl+ A to make selection around the image, and then press Ctrl+ C to copy the image. After that, paste it in your document by pressing Ctrl+ V. You can resize the image to fit in the canvas with the help of “Free transform tool” (Ctrl+ T).

Step 3

Now to increase the overall contrast of the image, click on the icon of “Create new fill or adjustment layer” which is present at the bottom of the layers panel and select the option of “Gradient map”. Apply the following gradient here. Once you are done, change the blending mode of this layer to “Overlay” and reduce its opacity to 40%.

Step 4

Create a “Color balance” adjustment layer now and use the given settings for midtones.

Step 5

Next, we’ll create 3D wooden text effect. We are going to write “Home”, so let’s begin with letter H. First of all, load the “Wood texture” in Photoshop. Now select a rectangle on it using “Rectangular marquee tool”, copy and paste it in your document. Resize it using “Free transform tool” and position it as below.

Step 7

Next, we’ll give this wood panel 3D look. For that, select the “Rectangle tool” to draw a rectangle along the right border of the panel. Now go to “Edit”> “Transform”> “Distort”. Use this tool to distort the rectangle as shown below. Make another rectangle at top of the panel and distort it in the same way.

Now select a portion of the wood texture, and paste it in the document. Now use the “Free transform tool” to compress it widthwise a bit.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Now click on this compressed layer and press Ctrl+ click on the distorted rectangle layer to make selection around it. Once you are done, click on the icon of “Add layer mask”.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Step 8

Apply the following settings for “Color overlay” on this new shape to give it darker tone.

Step 9

Cover the top rectangle with the wood texture in the same way. However, don’t darken this portion.

Step 10

Now collect all the 3 layers forming 3D wood panel in a group, label it as “3D Panel”. Duplicate this group by going to “Layer”> “Duplicate Group”. Drag this duplicated group to the right side as below. You can replace the front texture by selecting another portion of wood texture in this duplicated group to get a variety.

Step 11

Next, to complete the letter H, select another rectangular portion from the wood texture and arrange it as below in your document.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Now apply the following Layer style settings on it.

Step 12

Now we’ll create shadow of the letter H. Create a new layer just below the front panel layer and select the “Soft round brush” with 50% opacity. Set #000000 as your foreground color and apply the brush to form shadow of front panel as below.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Collect all the layers forming letter H in a group, duplicate and then merge it (You can see these options by right clicking on the layer). Now turn it black by using #000000 shade in color overlay and distort it to give it shape as below.

Step 13

Letter H is almost ready. However, you can add nails to finish it up. Open any suitable nail image in Photoshop, select and paste it on a new layer in the document. Resize it and duplicate it few times according to the requirement. Position these at the joining points of wood panels as shown below.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Step 14

Make other letters in the same way. For each letter, you can use the same 3D panel and for all the front panels you can copy layer style of letter H front panel and paste it on front panels of rest of the letters to get the same effect.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Notice the letter E in the image above, where I’ve placed the front panels in 3D panel group of letter E just below the front texture layer. To give it proper shape, select the “Hard round eraser tool” and apply it vertically as shown below to give the impact that front panels are passing through the 3D panel. Press “Shift” key while using eraser tool to nicely erase the segment.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Step 15

Collect the letter’s shadow layers in a group and place this group below the HOME text. Now select the rest of the layers forming wooden text and collect them in a group. Label it as “Wooden text”.
Duplicate the “Wooden text” group and merge it. Now press Ctrl+ click on the merged text group to make selection around it and then create “Color balance” adjustment layer. Use the given values here to color the wood.

Step 16

Create a “Levels” adjustment layer now just for the wood text. To confine it to the text only, use the same technique as explained in step 15.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Step 17

Next, we’ll blend the text with the grass. For that, we need to make grass in front of the lower edges of text. So, set #677f06 as your foreground color and #384b02 as the background color. Both of these colors are picked from the background grass image. Now select “Brush tool” and choose “Soft round brush” from the properties bar at the top. Create a new layer at top of rest of the layers and apply the brush on it as shown below.

After that, select the “Grass” brush and open the “Brush panel” and uncheck the shape dynamics, scattering, color dynamics and transfer.  Adjust the size of grass brush and apply it on a new layer covering the lower edges of text.

Step 18

Our wooden text effect is ready. Now we’ll add few elements to make the whole scene more interesting. Load the air balloons image, select, copy and paste them in your document. You can use any selection tool for the purpose, I’ll be using “Quick selection tool” for most of the images. However, you can use “Pen tool” for more precision.

Step 19

Load the birds image now, select few birds, paste them on a new layer in the document. Apply the following settings for “Bevel and emboss” on this layer to make them pure white.

Step 20

Import the nest to the document on a new layer, resize and position it over the letter M as below.

3D Wooden Text Effect

I want to give the eggs a bright color. So select the #5de6e9 color and pick “Soft round brush tool”. Now apply it on a new layer above the nest layer just over the eggs and change the Blending mode of this layer to “Color”. You can duplicate this layer to get an enhanced effect.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Next to add shadow of the nest, create a new layer just below the nest layer and apply “Soft round brush” in pure black shade as below. Reduce the opacity of this layer to 50%.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Step 21

Add few birds and butterfly over the text. Don’t forget to add shadow for them.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Step 22

Now we’ll add few elements on the grass. Resize and align different elements as you like. However, make sure to create shadow for them and make grass at their lower edges to blend them nicely. Or you can use grass shaped eraser tool at the lower edges of objects which are placed over the grass to get the same effect.

3D Wooden Text Effect

I’ve enhanced the home’s roof color in the same way as we did for the eggs.

Step 23

Next, load the other home image in Photoshop, select its front door and paste it in your document. Resize and position it as below. Then change the Blending mode of this layer to “Linear light”, you can duplicate this layer to make the door more clear, change the blending mode of duplicated layer to “Color burn” and reduce its opacity to 50%.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Step 24

Load the “Cloud brushes” in Photoshop and apply them on a new layer at top of rest of the layers. I’ve used them subtly to cover some parts of balloons. Reduce the opacity of cloud layer to 40-50%.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Step 25

Lastly, we’ll make few adjustments to boost up our final result. Create a “Color balance” adjustment layer at top of rest of the layers and use the given settings here.

3D Wooden Text Effect

3D Wooden Text Effect

Step 26

Create a “Levels” adjustment layer and use the given settings for it.

3D Wooden Text Effect

Step 27

Now right click on any of the layers and choose the option of “Flatten image”. Now go to “Filter”> “Sharpen”> “Unsharp mask”. Apply the following setting here.
